Seeing the thread where apparently Butch mentioned Darrell Taylor as a potential breakout guy and thinking of the crazy depth of freakish athleticism we have at DE cause me to think of this as a potential metric to compare across position groupings. This could go along in part with my prior posts attempting to rank the talent level of the players on Team 120. Looking back at some historic rosters could be interesting (like 2001 Vols, 2001 Miami, 1999 Vols, 1998 Vols, 2011 LSU, 2011 Alabama, 2014 Ohio State, and many others)
In using this metric, I am trying to find about the median of the range of possibilities, since the future is unpredictable with injuries and all.
Looking at our 2016 DEs, here are my guesses:
Derek Barnett - 8.5 year expected NFL career (could certainly be longer)
Jonathan Kongbo - 3.5 year expected NFL career (could be longer, or could be as few as 0, still a bit up in the air)
Kyle Phillips - 5.0 year expected NFL career (still a bit early to project)
Corey Vereen - 2.5 year expected NFL career (may be able to make his way onto a roster)
Darrell Taylor - 5.0 year expected NFL career (could be 12 years, perhaps, but still early to say)
Latroy Lewis - 1.5 year expected NFL career (bit lower chance of making a roster than Vereen, but not a 0% chance)
Austin Smith - 3.5 year expected NFL career (probably either 0 or 7 is more likely than 3 or 4, but medians/midpoints here)
Andrew Butcher - 2.5 year expected NFL career (maybe not as a DE, but can he be big enough for DT?)
DeMarya Dixon - 0.5 year expected NFL career (not quite sure how he will get on the field for the Vols enough to be noticed, but no offense intended)
Mykelle McDaniel - ?? (no clue on him yet, as he just signed)
Adding all of those up gives a cumulative expected NFL career length of our DE squad of about 32.0 years.......prior to doing these estimates, I said 30-45 years in a prior post, so that sounds about right.
