I just finished watching the entire Oklahoma v Akron game. A few observations:
- Akron had a stout defensive line. 3 of the 4 starters were transfers from larger schools - including one from Ohio State. They were able to play straight up against Oklahoma's OLine. I like Tennessee's match-up there. Oklahoma had 100 yards rushing as a team.
- Orlando Brown, Jr. started for Oklahoma at LT and is protecting the QB's blindside. He was pretty much a swinging gate. Alot of reaching and some penalties. Oklahoma will have to scheme around him to give help or Tennessee's DE's are going to eat him alive.
- Oklahoma's passing game included alot of quick passes and time throws. Akron was not able to press on the outside and disrupt the timing or extend the play.
- Akron had absolutely no passing game. They were 6 of 26 passing and that was based more on their inability to hit an open receiver more than Oklahoma's defense disrupting the passing. The Akron starting QB missed the first two passes to open recievers and that set the standard for the entire game. Akron brought in a running QB, Oklahoma loaded the box for the entire game and Akron finished with only 88 passing yards and just over 200 yards of offense for the entire game. Akron was only 4 of 19 on 3rd down. They just couldn't throw it and were one dimensional.
- Oklahoma looked a bit undisciplined. 90 yards of penalties against OU for the game.
Seeing the 41-3 score and knowing how tough Akron played Tennessee a couple years ago had me concerned for next weeks game. I'm feeling much better about Tennessee's match-up's after watching the OU-Akron game and doing a deeper dive. Oklahoma is talented on defense and at the offensive skill positions. However, their offensive line can be exploited by a fast and aggressive defensive front 7. It will be a battle but I'm feeling alot better about this upcoming game.
Go Vols!
