I think most on here, including Brent and Austin, were surprised by the AD hire. I don't think anyone on here saw this coming from any direction and didn't even think the person who got the job was in the running for it. I didn't.....
After thinking about some things last night, I asked myself, "What was the committee thinking? Why did they choose someone who wasn't the popular choice?"
Well, it's very simple: The committee wanted someone with a Tennessee tie and who had experience. They made a business decision.
It's the same in the business world in most cases. Unless you can give me a compelling reason to hire someone with less experience, then we will hire the person with the most experience. I think that is what the committee did with this hire.
I am not one who knock either Phillip's or David's experience, but I do think that when you look at things from a 10,000 foot overview things change in the eyes of those on the committee and the administration.
Now, did the two popular candidates have people for and against them on the committee? I am sure they did and didn't, but I am also sure that the committee agreed to do what was best for Tennessee, and that may be an unpopular decision to most. At least, this is my hope, I would think that this is what others hope as well.
With that being said, I don't think what we or others say on this board will change the opinion of the administration or the power brokers at the University of Tennessee. All we can do is hope this athletic director is successful and that he/she can unite the fan base.
This is more about the athletes that we as donors support and the education they hope to receive. Please get behind this program and stop arguing with each other. This situation has made for a long year on this board and I am sure that we can all find other things to argue about that are more important.
