Was going through some old pictures and a year ago today @P_Fortenberry posted the words below. Thought it was cool and although today isn't gameday its the start of hopefully a special season.
August is a long month for everyone. It seems like it will never end and honestly, the last week of camp is kind of dull. Most position battles are over, we’ve watch the same thing for a full month now and you just want to see the Vols play.
You want to see if the young guys (this year more than any) are what they’ve been hyped up to be. Who has really taken advantage of opportunities? Can someone who hasn’t made an impact finally turn a corner when the lights come on?
We analyze, analyze again, maybe over-analyze, as we try and cover this team as well as we can. But’ we’re all just waiting for that one night; kickoff.
But, then game day rolls around and all of the long, hot days of August seem like forever ago. The day slowly creeps by. You look at the clock, wondering if it’s too early to head to the game (is it ever too early?). You try and make sure you’ve covered the bases; you know as much about this team as humanly possible.
You think again about the strategy, you think about the best… and you think about the worst. You think about everything that could go well or everything that could go wrong. You look at the clock again and only 10 minutes have past. Dang it.
But, soon, the Vols will walk down Peyton Manning Pass and take a left on Phillip Fulmer Way before disappearing into the cathedral of football that in Neyland Stadium.
It’s a walk that Peyton, Reggie, Jamal, Eric and Al have all walked before. It’s a walk we are all familiar with.
Then comes the Pride of the Southland Marching Band in all their splendor. That was one of my favorite things about Tennessee football when I was a kid, watching the band make their way to the stadium.
A little later, when everyone is in their seat, the Pride take their place on the field. And as if in military parade move with such precision to form the drills that have given us all memories, leading to that giant T. And, inevitably, the game.
August is a long month. Today is the last day of August. Today we see Tennessee football. Today is game day.
