Was listening to Full Ride today which is normally Rick Neuheisel & Chris Childers but today it was Braden Gall, a SiriusXM Radio Host out of the University of Tennessee and he had Dave Hayes of ESPN on talking about the meetings of the “Alliance” (between the PAC12, BIG10 & ACC). These meetings have been about the Playoff (supposedly #1) but Greg Sankey of the SEC is also in attendance and Jim Phillips of the ACC was (duly appointed by the other 2 conferences) as the Spokesperson and Leader for the Alliance. Braden said that first and foremost the ACC has a very VALID point that before expansion is put to the forefront - the Transfer Portal needs to be addressed immediately because there are 3,000 + college players in the portal now, one of whom is in the portal for the 3rd time and we have thousands of highschool Seniors waiting to see if they will get a look - but 3,000 of them could get overlooked! We also have the NIL (Name, Image & Likeness Free for All going on and until some kind of limits or caps are put on the carte blanche in place now the total chaos is going to continue. The current Playoff structure is in place until 2026. These other problems NEED attention now which includes the dissolution of the current NCAA. Mark Emmerich and his minions are responsible (over the years) for the current NIL problem and their refusal to rule on any regulations is evidence enough that they have outgrown their usefulness. Another example is the fact Stan Wilcox was basically run out of Duke, came to FSU as Athletic Director, is responsible for the hiring of Willie Taggart as Head Coach who was fired a year and a half later and cost FSU $171/2M - then gets promoted to the NCAA!!! Braden addressed the disparity of revenue between the conferences (which is mainly due to the fact all the contracts were individually negotiated). These meetings are attempting to negotiate an across the board TV contract so that: if the SEC & BIG10 are bringing in $80M per school after split, and the PAC12, BIG12 and ACC are bringing in $30M per school after split - the objective of the renegotiation is to: keep the SEC & BIG10 at $80M or as near that as possible, and the PAC12, BIG10 and ACC up to $60M or more. This is providing ESPN is onboard. Obviously the BEST SCENARIO would be that ESPN would find enough $$’s that the SEC & BIG10 would get a little increase and the PAC12, BIG12 and ACC would get huge increases by getting matches. There is also the deal with the NBC TV deal ending with Notre Dame in 2025 (a year before the Playoff deal ends) Jim Phillips is very attuned to the fact Notre Dame is in the ACC full time for all other sports but football and he wants their allegiance across the board. By the time 2025/26 comes around with the Portal and NIL - there is a real possibility we could have a College Football Commissioner appointed by the Government (been a lot of talk it could be Greg Sankey), have caps on NIL, no BIG12, 16 member conferences, a 12 team Playoff, Bowl games with no conference tie ins - renegotiated TV contracts making conference revenues more equitable and a college football product none of us will recognize……….
