As you know, the tomato is probably the number one ingredient in Italian cooking. They take great pride in their tomatoes.
However, knowledge drop, tomatoes are not from Italy nor anywhere else in Europe.
They originated in western South & Central America. They were commonly used by Aztecs.
They didn't arrive in Europe until the Conquistadors brought them back to Spain in the 1500s. From there, it spread throughout Europe.
Italians didn't use tomato sauce until approximately 1692 and didn't use it for pizza (or equivalent) until the mid 1700s.
