Overall Theme – Coaching Letdowns
1) I wondered why our passing numbers were so low coming into the game.. the first three drives explained it very quickly.. Kendrick literally couldn’t get in the way of their DE.. To the point that we knew we couldn’t run a 5 step drop. I haven’t seen Richmond play one down so lets assume he couldn’t get in the way of their DE either but I have seen Chance Hall. If Dobbs wasn’t mobile the game would have looked like the 2014 FL game or the 2014 OK game with jail breaks on the right side of the line all game.
I don’t know who has the final say on who plays / starts but I will say this.. Debord did an incredible job of ‘using what he had’ on O considering he couldn’t call a pass play downfield.. Trick plays, designed runs, roll outs.. consider that the Vols had 250 rushing yards against a FL defense without ANY downfield passing game.
2) Same scenario as above just insert Colton Jumper playing exclusively the first two drives. FL had a long run in which Jumper was pancaked and then on the TD he gave up the 5 extra yds for the score.. not to say that Kirkland had a great game but he held his gaps and was in position causing the FL QB to make great plays (which he did at times). This coaching decision cost us 7 points.. after the change was made the D held firm against a bad FL Offense until the 2nd half.
Who will be the ‘legacy player’ that plays over the talented player this year?? It has been a staple of Jones coaching tender as much as 2nd half letdowns.
3 I realize the team was in shell sock after FL went ahead but we had 1:25 on the clock with 2 timeouts and managed to run 4 plays in that span.. think about that.. Dobbs is a genius but the management from the coaching down to the QB was horrible.. the play with 10 seconds left that backed us up 5 yds when we had a timeout just blows my mind.
Overall rewatching this game makes me realize that 2016 will be a fun year but an outsider would say our coaching will cost us atleast a game this year and keep us out of ‘the big one.’ I don’t think you can simply say a new DC will change this..
