The Memphis paper reports, “I tried everything I could do,” said Ferguson, the elder. “What do you tell a kid who is 18 years old? He said he did his year. I think it all started when he was kind of blindsided when they took Josh Dobbs. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to compete, he wanted them to be truthful with him. You could tell he was blindsided on Signing Day. He said, ‘I wouldn’t have gone there, Dad, I wouldn’t have done it.’ That soured him from day one.” So Ferguson would not have signed if he had known Butch was going to sign JD. The statement that "It wasn't that he didn't want to compete, he wanted them to be truthful with him" means that he didn't think he should have to compete for the starting job with JD.
He does regret not telling Butch that he was leaving. Good thing Peyton didn't leave because we signed Branndon Stewart.
