Tennessee's Jordan Bowden was selected as the SEC men's basketball Freshman of the Week Monday after scoring in double figures against both Presbyterian and North Carolina last week.
His averages for the week stood at 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists (no turnovers) and 2.0 steals.
Against the Blue Hose, Bowden caught fire early in the second half. The Knoxville, Tennessee, native and Carter High School graduate scored 11 straight points over four consecutive possessions, knocking down a three 3-pointers in a row before capping the scoring flurry with a steal and breakaway dunk. Bowden would finish that game with a season-best 21 points while knocking down five treys—also a season-best.
Five days later, Bowden got his seventh starting nod of the season at seventh-ranked North Carolina, finishing with 12 points in a game-high 34 minutes of action. He found his way into double digits before intermission, shooting 4-of-5 from the field and hitting two 3-pointers en route to 10 points at the break. He grabbed four of his five rebounds in the second half.
The true freshman played a team-high 57 total minutes spanning UT's two games last week and did not commit a single turnover.
On the season, Bowden is Tennessee's fifth-leading scorer (9.3 ppg), is one of the Vols' top 3-point shooters (.342) and is perfect from the free-throw line (7-for-7). He also ranks fifth on the squad in both steals (0.8 spg) and assists (1.3 apg).
Bowden and the Vols play a pair of home games against in-state foes this week, hosting Tennessee Tech on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET, SEC Network) and Lipscomb on Thursday (7 p.m. ET, SEC Network+).
The Volunteers travel to Nashville Sunday for the "Battle on Broadway" against unbeaten Gonzaga at Bridgestone Arena. That game will tip off at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
Think he's gonna be a good one.
