Since the departure of DIckey, the athletic department (or departments) has been a dumpster fire.

Hamilton was proven to be utterly inept when it came to personnel decisions. Hart was brought in to do an utterly thankless job in merging the for too long divided departments and was ripped to pieces for doing so. And too many see Blackburn, right or wrong, as Hamilton 2.0 (although I personally think he would be OK). That, and dealing with a University administration that seemed to think athletics was at best an ATM for siphoning money, it was the worst of times.

The ascendancy of Phillip Fulmer is an obvious attempt to bring in a true Tennessee man who can unite a long-fragmented University. Whether you like him or dislike him, Fulmer is 110% Tennessee and truly cares. He also sees this as an opportunity to fix what went badly wrong for him as HC a decade ago and ensure that no other coach has to go through the BS of dealing with a transplanted Gator like Cheek.

Just my two cents worth.
