But to put the 2021 5.7% increase quoted by @lawvol in perspective, let’s look at GDP dollars (as opposed to percentages). I never trust one set of numbers, esp from any politician.
In 2019 (pre-pandemic), GDP was about $19 trillion.
Because the economy was shut down for much of 2020, GDP dropped to about $18.4 trillion.
In 2021, it rebounded to about $19.4 trillion. That’s an increase for 2021 of 2% over 2019, a fair comparison and honest comparison..
When states reopened after the 2020 shrinkage, GDP was going to increase. But GDP increased only 2% over its pre-pandemic level of 2019 even with huge government spending that resulted in runaway inflation.
I don't see these numbers as being very different under any party or leader. But we should get spending under control, or it can get worse.
