Tennessee hit the practice field on this chilly, windy Friday morning for practice six of spring. It’s another incredibly busy day on campus as Friday marks day one of this weekend’s coaches clinic. There was an estimated 300 coaches taking in Friday’s morning session.

The takeaways of the day was who was not out there. Neither tight end Princeton Fant or running back Jabari Small were dressed out today. Neither is believed to be a major ordeal, but might be worth noting considering there’s a scrimmage tomorrow.

Heupel and company are usually cautious – especially in spring.

The wind was a factor this morning but not nearly as much as it was last Saturday. The quarterbacks threw routes on air to receives in the redzone to begin group work. Overall, they all looked clean and sharp. Both Hooker and Milton missed high once (that I saw) while Jackson threw one pass behind his target. But that’s about it.

Jalin Hyatt made a really nice catch in the back of the end zone, going up to pull down a high throw from Jackson. Squirrel White had a good day running routes from the slot. Ramel Keyton received special instruction from Kelsey Pope a couple of times during the period.

The only ‘bad’ drop I saw (while out there) was from Julian Nixon on a slant pattern in the end zone.

Defensively, the cornerback group is continued to be led by sophomore Christian Charles. The safety-by-nature is taking advantage of a new opportunity and excelling in the early-going. Newcomer Desmond Williams was not having a good day while we were out there as Willie Martinez was getting after him on several occasions to ‘do the drill right.’

Tamarion McDonald is still working at safety, along with Jaylen McCollough and Trevon Flowers. Defensive back Doneiko Slaughter was not in pads for the second-straight day and as joined by fellow teammates Warren Burrell, DeShawn Ricker, Kamal Hadden and Brandon Turnage in the stretch line – wearing a jersey but with no pads.

As we were walking off, the linebackers and tight ends were coming together to run a variation of the ‘victory drill.’ The linebacker would take on the tight end (from a three point stance) and the running back would choose a side, trying to get past the cones before tackle. Jeremy Banks won the lone rep I was able to see, tackling the ballcarrier at the make-shift line of scrimmage.

There’s plenty of prospects on campus right now, but no one of note to my knowledge. 2024 Jayden Davis is not here yet. He tweeted earlier this week that he would be at Tennessee’s practice Friday morning. We’ll see if he makes it up.

The Vols will take part in scrimmage #1 of the spring tomorrow and we will hear from Josh Heupel right after. Heupel is the only one who will address injuries, so we’ll get the latest on LaTrell Bumphus, Doneiko Slaughter, Princeton Fant, Jabari Small and Juwan Mitchell.

Remember, Bumphus was seen on crutches at UT’s Pro Day on Wednesday.

Peep the War Room for a list of recruits who will be on campus tomorrow.
