Lew Evans, a 6-9, 230-pound forward from Salt Lake City, Utah, plans to enroll at Tennessee this summer and play for the Volunteers as a graduate transfer during the 2016-17 season.
Evans will earn his degree in Business from Utah State this summer. He signed paperwork Wednesday to make his impending transfer to UT official.
As a junior at Utah State last season, Evans averaged 8.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game and logged three double-doubles while appearing in 30 contests with 16 starts.
He scored 22 points at San Diego State on Dec. 30, 2015, making four of six attempts from 3-point range and going 10-for-12 at the free-throw line.
Evans shot .412 from the field, .356 from 3-point range and .713 at the foul line last season.
“I’m excited because with only two other upperclassmen on our roster, Lew will bring some much-needed experience next year,” Vols head coach Rick Barnes said. “He also adds a level of toughness to our frontcourt, along with a versatile skill set. His makeup is exactly what we need with this team.”
After a standout career at Highland High School in Salt Lake City—during which he earned All-State honors and led the Rams to the 2011 state championship—Evans spent one year in prep school at New Hampton Prep in New Hampton, New Hampshire.
From there, he enrolled at Casper College in Wyoming, where he appeared in 30 games as a freshman and helped guide the Thunderbirds to a region title.
Prior to the 2013-14 campaign, Evans signed to play for head coach Danny Manning at Tulsa. Evans started 22 games for the Golden Hurricane as a sophomore and averaged 5.3 points and 4.1 rebounds while logging 20.6 minutes per game. He helped propel Tulsa to a 13-3 record in Conference USA play and the second round of the NCAA Tournament, where the Hurricane fell to UCLA.
When Manning left Tulsa following that season, Evans transferred closer to home to Utah State to play for legendary head coach Stew Morrill. Evans sat out the 2014-15 season as a redshirt to comply with NCAA transfer guidelines, and Morrill retired at season’s end. Evans’ head coach last season at Utah State was Tim Duryea.
Evans will become the first Utah native ever to play for Tennessee. He will be the fourth incoming graduate transfer in program history, following forward John Fields (2010-11) and guards Antonio Barton (2013-14) and Ian Chiles (2014-15).
Tennessee’s crop of scholarship newcomers for next season now stands at seven. Evans joins guard Jordan Bone, guard Jordan Bowden, forward John Fulkerson, forward Jalen Johnson, guard Kwe Parker and forward Grant Williams.
