Vols Ranked Third in 2005 Preseason

How could the Vols be ranked 3rd in the 2005 preseason and finish up 5-6 and not even get to a bowl game? My memory is "foggy" on this. What events occurred for this to happen? This must have been part of the reason for the firing of Phillip Fulmer.
