Weather School: Why does it storm a lot more in the mountains and plateau than in the valley?

Orographic lift: occurs when an air mass is forced from a low elevation to a higher elevation as it moves over rising terrain. As the air mass gains altitude it quickly cools down adiabatically, which can raise the relative humidity to 100% and create clouds and, under the right conditions, precipitation.

95% of the time it’s very hot and dry in the valley but you can look off to the mountains and plateau and see thunderstorms almost every day. Just because it’s very hot and humid in the valley doesn’t always equal rain because there’s not a “trigger” to make the air rise. The mountains is the “trigger” to make the air rise.
