So I was going through wikipedia, recollecting about the Vol teams of my youth.
In 1989, we went 11-1, the one loss was to Bama. We beat Auburn, which finished #6 in the country. Auburn beat Bama. We won the Cotton Bowl vs. #10 Arkansas, and we finished #5 in the country. Every team above us had one loss, except for Florida State, which had TWO losses.
What am I missing here? There doesn't appear to be a single objective reason to say we were better or worse than any of the teams above us.
You could also argue that the 1990 team was as good as any in the country if you look at who we played, but I understand how a two-tie, two-loss team wasn't going to be in the Top 5.
