Every hopeful post about the Vols in the tourney starts with “If we get hot…

…we can advance in the tourney”.

Does anyone really have any confidence in that happening? We play a style that simply is not conducive to utilizing the talent we have recruited. Coaches spend hours upon hours recruiting so theoretically they can get the best players in the country. Theoretically you’re recruiting these kids because they have shown over a period of years that they are better than other kids.

So when you get these kids, that are theoretically better than the other kids, would you put them in a style that brings them closer to the talent level of the other kids or do you put them in a position that allows their talent to win out?

Our best team on the floor, in most games, would actually be with JJJ at the 5 and surrounding him with the other guards. Our bigs bring almost nothing offensively and a little presence defensively. I would argue that unclogging the lane on offense and letting KC, ZZ and Santi have at it would more than make up for any post presence in defense or any perceived rebounding issues.

That’s a bridge too far, since we won’t even play a 4 out/1 in lineup until the big lineup has proven it’s not working, normally 8-10 mins into the game. But we need to play our best lineups and open the court for KC and ZZ. Our bigs don’t catch the ball on the interior. So why are they in there to set screens and roll to the hoop? Let the small lineup play and push pace.
