two were immediately after Coach Battle was replaced, and tne other was a result of an inordinate number of injuries on the offensive line in 1988.
Since 2005, the vols have had eight losing seasons, and along with Vanderbilt are one of two SEC teams to not win ten games in a year. Lane Kiffen's departure in January of 2010 effectively put this program on probation for which it has never fully recovered. The timing of his resignation did not allow us to get in front of it, and MH's heavy handedness of dealing with Coach Cut did not allow us to make the best hire.
The further we get away from our glory days, the harder it is to recover what you lost.
This program for a number of seasons has been a place where good coaches go to die. Dave Clawson, Bob Shoop, Jim Chaney are all coaches with great resumes that failed miserably at Tennessee. I don't have an answer, but all of the successful coaches we've had since Neyland had deep Tennessee ties.
Bowden Wyatt played for Neyland, Dickey played for Woodruff who played for Neyland, Majors and Fulmer were Tennessee men. The failed coaches were not Tennessee graduates.
With that said, CJP inherited a program that was further in the shitter than we've been since Bill Battle. He inherited a team that went 0-8. At least we beat Kentucky and Vandy the year Fulmer was replaced. CJP needs at least five if not six years to turn this thing around. It's the least we can do for a coach who we knew was risky and would have to learn on the job.
