I have a big problem with the way this is interpreted now. It seems to be an automatic call if the quarterback is not outside the tackle box and throws a pass that does not reach the LOS near an eligible receiver. That is not the intent of the rule. The full name of the rule is "intentional grounding in order to avoid a loss." It has never been against the rules to ground the ball to stop the clock (not called a penalty now either) or simply to get out of a play that is going nowhere. QBs should be allowed to throw the ball away when they see the play is not going to work. The true definition of intentional grounding is when a QB simply tosses the ball away to no one when an opposing player has his hands on the QB or is very close to being able to tackle him. Very close.
