His heart has quit on them long before he garners up the courage to pack up and walk out the door. He hasn't been invested in the family for quite some time and really just puts his selfish wants first. In reality, he's already moved in with the next one in his heart and all his focus is in envisioning how great that is going to be. In the end, it's better that he's moved on if he wasn't invested in working through the problems and issues at home.
