To satisfy my own curiosity, I decided to compare what I feel are the most relevant statistics for Brady and Manning. I go into this blind, not knowing what the statistics show. I'll put my person opinion at the bottom.
TEAM STATS
Super Bowl Victories
Manning: 1
Brady: 4
Career Winning Percentage
Manning: 67.9% (190-90)
Brady: 76.7% (181-55)
Post-Season Record
Manning: 11-13
Brady: 21-8
Team Record Year Each Was Out For Season
Manning: 2-14
Brady: 10-6
Average Points Scored Against Each Team's Defense
Manning: 21.4
Brady: 18.8
INDIVIDUAL STATS (for some of these it will be relevant that Manning has been in the league 2 more years)
Career Completion Percentage
Manning: 65.5%
Brady: 63.5%
Touchdowns
Manning: 530
Brady: 392
Interceptions
Manning: 234
Brady: 143
Career TD/INT Ratio
Manning: 2.27
Brady: 2.74
Career Rushing Stats
Manning: 673 yards with 18 TDs
Brady: 823 yards with 14 TDs
CONCLUSION: Statistically, I have to say (however much it pains me) that Brady is the better statistical QB. I thought going in that Brady would have the edge in most team stats, but Peyton would own the individual stats. The TD/INT ratio in particular surprised me that Manning was behind Brady (though they were 2nd and 3rd among active QBs respectively).
I will say this....I don't put as much stock in championship rings. If Lebron James had stayed in Cleveland and never won a championship, does that mean he was a worse basketball player than he is now? I say no.
I think Manning did more for the game and more for the position. I think Manning changed the way people look at the position and what they look for in a franchise QB. I think Manning is a better dude, and a more likable person. I would rather Peyton Manning QB my team 100% of time over Tom Brady. That being said, when the lists for the greatest QBs of all-time are formulated, I think an objective person has to put Manning right behind Brady. Personally, I go: 1) Montana, 2) Brady, 3) Manning
