Having grown up in Texas, it is not surprising this was a flip. The entity called the University of Texas is rich, big, influential and use to getting their way. How they got down and stayed that way for so long is mind "bottlin," but make no mistake they are going to make noise, and lots of it in the SEC. Having the big law school there gives them an extra advantage in the state legislature.
Texas carries a certain awe among high school athletes. Remember Santos told everyone to go fish, but when Texas called, his response was, but ithis is The University of Texas. The main reason schools like Oklahoma and to a lesser degree Arkansas have recruited well in the state is because of the large number of elite athletes. Texas has over 3,200 high schools and the second highest high school enrollment in the nation. That is 3,200+ starting QB's to pick from within your borders. Think about that.
In this case, we have a kid who was overlooked in that vastness of high school players and not only hardly rated, but basically off the charts. So he goes into the wilderness in Wyoming and puts up huge numbers and, of course, enters the portal. Now he is getting the royal treatment like a 5 star 17 year old high schooler. Look at how strange his recruitment was here. he had no experience. And now those longhorns want me. Me, a two star.
Texas can offer him a lifetime offer no one else can match, in his home state. It is no wonder he flipped.
I am not saying I like it or how it played out but once Texas decides a local boy is the one, the playing field becomes very tilted in their favor. And you can bet even the current SEC powers will get the same treatment and not just from Texas kids. We have a totally unplanned and unregulated NIL and as always, follow the money. All SEC schools are rich, but Texas owns richness. And they will be a bully once on board too. It is in their DNA. I imagine mom and dad are well taken care of.
