This offer doesn't surprise me at all.
I will start with I am biased here. Drew is my guy. Have worked with him in the past and we grew up in the same neighborhood. He is an incredible kid from a great family.
Drew is in the process of blowing up. During his JR year he started to get recruited by mid majors. That got up to around 20 or so actively recruiting him.
The offers have started to come. Many mid majors have pulled the trigger based on his first couple AAU tournaments.
Drew has grown about 5 inches in the last 2 years to get to a legit 6'9 after playing guard his whole life. He is now a stretch 4 man.
Tennessee offered 1st and it was smart. He will continue to blow up and will get many more high major offers if he doesn't shut his recruitment down.
His game:
1) Big time shooter. Gets it off quick and has range. This is a kid who will shoot 40% at 6'9
2) Feel for the game- grew up as a guard so his ball handling, passing ability and anticipation are not your normal 6'9 kid.
3) Passing- it is awesome to see him play in transition, long out let passes and find open teammates from every on the court
4) Shot blocking- long arms and great timing to use his length to get a lot of shots
5) Movement- very very fluid for 6'9. Good athlete but not the most explosive guy but at that size you don't have to be.
6) Ball handling- fun to watch him push the ball and lead the break
This is a very very skilled 6'9 kid who is nowhere close to his ceiling and with how Barnes and his staff develop players I can see why they feel in love with him. With how basketball is being played today it is all about spacing and shooting and Drew excels in both these areas.
Bottom line is this is a local kid who shoots the lights out and will continue to get better. Many more high major offers will come soon. Great job by Tennessee getting in early.
