San Diego State is hosting the Tony Gywnn Classic so this was another road game for our very young team. Beat Seton Hall earlier in the day 12-5.
Pitching
Zach Warren- started and absolutely dominated early (1st 3 innings). Vols had a big, long 4th inning at the plate and he couldn't find the strike zone. His stuff looked electric all day and he was pulled in the 4th with 1 out and bases loaded.
Bullpen continues throw really well and shows how much better they are this year.
Daniel Vasquez- Sophomore, came with bases loaded and 1 out. Allowed a hit. Then had a double play ball that SS Southall couldn't get a grip on. Game was 4-3 Vols. Threw another 2 innings and pitched well. An error in the OF lead to SDSU tying the game. Vasquez line 2.1 innings 0 ER 4 K's.
Connor Darling- Freshman, Came in the the 6th with 2 outs and runners in scoring position. Got out of the jam with a ground. Came back out for the 7th and struck out 2 in a clean inning. 1.2 innings 0 R 0 Hits and 2 K's
Jon Lipinski- Got the save 1.2 innings 0 R 0 Hits 0 BBs and 3 K's
Hitting
Jeff Moberg- 4 for 5 with the game winning HR in the 9th. Kid is a stud and is hitting .565 through 6 starts this year. Very hard to hit a HR at Tony Gwynn Stadium at night. He crushed that ball.
Brodie Leftridge- Has found his stroke again after struggling first few games. Had a couple hits for 2nd straight game. He is an impact bat for us.
Dom Thornton- Put up video game numbers in JUCO. After starting the last 4 games his bad has played. Is hitting .467 this year and he has pop. Had a couple knocks last night and a walk. If his bat continues to produce it will be huge for our lineup.
Very good start to the season with our talented freshman producing on the mound and at the plate.
