There have been 24 SECCGs, and 48 participants. Of those
12 (25%) were 8-0 in the SEC,
23 (48%) were 7-1,
11 (23%) were 6-2, and just
2 (4%) were 5-3 (USC in 2010 when the next team was a 4-4 UF team and LSU in 2001 that beat another 5-3 Arkansas team)
Adding up the records of division champs the West champs have oh-so slightly better record at 167-25 (versus 166-26 in the east) - but the average record of a champ is 7-1 for both divisions. Since we added Mizzou and A&M every division champ has had a 7-1 record and there have been two 7-1 teams that have not made the SECCG.
Since 1992, There were seven 7-1 teams and thirty 6-2 teams (including 6-1-1 teams) that did not make the SECCG. Put another way, only 11 of 41 (27%) of 6-2 teams even made the SECCG, while 23 of 30 (77%) 7-1 teams made it.
The take away is that you really need to go at least 7-1 to win your division.
