Our personnel has 3-4 written all over it.
1. We are EXTREMELY thin at DT. A 3-4 would allow us mask that as much as possible. Rotate Vickers and K Mac once healthy and hopefully another steps up.
2. Kyle Phillips, Mixon, and Kongbo all fit the 3-4 DE mold very very well. Quay Picou likely fits better as a 3-4 DE as well. He's listed at 277 lbs. Potentially Butcher as well. Word is he's Around 270 now. All we'd need is one newcomer to step up and we'd be six deep there.
3. Derell Taylor and Austin Smith have 3-4 LB written all over them. Those guys are not great at getting off blocks in the running game with their hand in dirt. They need to be a couple yards off the line chasing the football on early downs and rushing the passer on passing downs.
4. Move Todd Kelly, D Taylor, and Austin Smith to linebacker and all the sudden we have a ton of depth and athletic guys to go get the football. Kirkland and Butili in the middle, and Kelly and D Taylor on the outside. We'd have depth with McDowell, Sapp, Jumper, Smith, etc..
Our biggest issues are depth at DT and LB.. This would address both.. And our DEs already fit the 3-4 like a glove.. I hope Shoop has the ability to build a defensive scheme based on personnel. To me this is a no brainer.
I know that's ALOT of position changes and would be a very new defensive scheme. But after this year there's absolutely no reason to try and build off of what we have in place. We gotta go back to the drawing board and just come up with a new plan this year based on what we've got.
Thoughts @Brent_Hubbs @P_Fortenberry @Rob Lewis ?
