I have no idea how this is going to unfold, so I won't pretend like I do. I'll just piece together info Brent has given and roll with it. It appears the tea leaves on VQ is hinting that the hire is going to be Larry Scott. The things I know about Scott are this... and please fill me in if I leave things out. TE Coach at Miami under Golden. Good/Great Florida recruiter. Coached the final 4/5 games of Canes season after Golden got canned. Came here to coach TE. Really showed himself to Butch last half of year in terms of offensive prep and planning (against our worst opponents in terms of D)? I know I'm probably missing some things, but that is the cliff note version of his OC resume to Butch.
How can Butch hang his career on a guy that has never called plays before? I just don't see it. Just doesn't make sense to me at all. Being an interim head coach doesn't prepare you for play calling in the toughest conference in America. I'm not saying he won't be great either. He more than likely will be great, but how do we know? We have nothing to hang our hats on. No stats from his offenses to give us glimmers of hope. No idea to how he will change things up (if Butch lets him).
I think if Butch does hire from within by going with Scott, it makes it very, very clear no top notch assistant, or even a young up and comer assistant wanted to come to Knoxville to work with Butch. That is the worrisome part. Really wish Butch had the fortitude to make a hire like Clemson did 5 years ago when they hired Chad Morris.
