Greetings. Happy Monday. Hope you all had a great weekend and have a great week. Wanted to share my thoughts and notes from my rewatch of the Carolina game as I do every Monday.
- Was impressed by Hendon Hooker on third down. He was 3-for-5 for 39 yards and two touchdowns. On his other completion, it went for a first down.
- Hooker was 17-for-23, but probably should have been 20-for-23. Velus Jones, Cedric Tillman and Princeton Fant all dropped a pass.
- Against pressure, Hooker/Tennessee's offense didn't find much success. Hooker only attempted one pass under pressure and it fell incomplete. Carolina was able to generate pressure and it resulted in a sack nearly every time. It really started with the final drive of the first half. Carolina brought extra bodies, got to Hooker and picked up three sacks right before the half. So Carolina kept bringing extra guys in the second half and got home twice for two sacks.
- Tennessee did a great job of protecting Hooker until that final drive of the first half. South Carolina brought seven twice and six once, and Tennessee picked it up perfectly. Velus Jones' touchdown came against the 6-man rush. O-line/RB did its job in protection, and Hooker did a good job of getting the ball out to Velus on a "fast" route out to the flat. Velus did a great job of making a guy miss and Princeton Fant did an even better job blocking down field.
- The running game was great. Especially in the first half. I only tallied one "negative" run in the first half given my perception of the situation. For the game, I considered 78% of Tennessee's positive runs.
- I find it very interesting how the deep ball attempts have gone down over the weeks with Hendon Hooker at quarterback. Tennessee only took one against South Carolina and it resulted in the JaVonta Payton touchdown. The other completion of more than 30 yards was the strike to Velus Jones on a skinny post over the middle.
