Butch has never been HBC in Power 5 before UT

1) Recruiting: CBJ system based on finding the 3* steals early and holding on to their early commitments. This worked in the Group 5, but not in the SEC. Also, high class rankings based off numbers because he was flipping an entire roster. See last years ranking and numbers. His biggest "learning on the job" with the SEC and recruiting--- recruiting the Line of Scrimmage. This is why we are struggling in year 4. It took Butch 2 years to figure out he needed to change his recruiting profile for the LOS. Its going to take 17' & 18' to reload with linemen. Butch has had some 5*'s but refer to #2.

2) Development: In the Group 5, it is easier to take a 3* steal with some talent and get them motivated to be able to win without a ton of player development. Cant do that in the SEC. Butch needs to reverse this. If he is taking 3* "steals", he HAS to develop them, especially on the lines. Mahoney also needs to get on board with this because until this changes, our OL going against stacked D lines in the SEC will continue to make for struggles for the Vols.

3) In Game Coaching: This has to get better. It seems Butch is quite stubborn about his way. It appears this rubs off on his coaches. What I mean is playing to your team's strengths and protecting your team from being exposed for its weaknesses. On D, be aggressive, but not so much you leave your 3rd and 4th string DB's exposed to be picked on for big plays. On O, if continually running a read run on 1st down only gets you 1 - 2 yds, mix it up more. Get your playmakers such as Jennings involved earlier and often. Mix it up more if what you are doing is not working. This IMO is where CBJ and his staff struggles most, but is the most important part of the job. THIS is what wins and loses games.

After a little over 3.5 seasons, I give Butch the followings grades:
1) Recruiting: B+
2) Development: C+
3) In Game: B-
I think Butch will get better. With all the analyzing CBJ does, I hope he puts it to work and continues to evolve and get better. He is definitely learning on the Big Boy Job. If he can make some Offensive coaching tweaks, especially with a QB coach for Dormady and Guarantano, Butch and the Vols will be better next year and going forward.
