The Depressing Stuff
Hey, this is going to hurt for awhile. Even if we hadn't closed anything down, people would have curtailed spending and tanked the economy. It's happened before for much worse reasons. There's just no avoiding it. Even if we ended the curtailment measures today, the restrictions would continue on in spirit for quite a long time. People aren't going back to normal any time soon and that's going to cause a lot of economic suffering.
The Good Stuff
But if there's one thing our country has proved, it's that it is resilient. We aren't immune to hard times, but even if we experience the worst times we've seen since The Great Depression, we'll fight back. Our ingenuity and the American work ethic hasn't gone away, and eventually we're going to wake up from this, and then the hard times will be in trouble. We will battle every day to return to the American way of life. And who or what will stop us? Our system works--it's been copied all over the world--and it will continue to work when we dig out of this. We will start spending again. Many people who lost businesses will dust themselves off and start over, and for every one of them who decides not to, two more people will step up and replace them. It's impossible to keep us down.
To quote Arnold, "We'll be back."
