In defense of our RB’s, why does Chaney have them so close to the LOS??

I watch other teams and their RB’s and QB’s are further back some way back. Hard to hit a hole and build speed when you are right on top of the lineman. Wished we would run more out of the pistol and under center to give the backs a better chance to run downhill.
