Have you ever had to fire a friend? Its tough! I do not believe Jake just up and left this explosive up and coming offensive in the SEC to coach one guy in the NFL and his pencil pushing backups.
Pure speculation and yes it doesn't matter. But, since its iced in cave week with no recruiting news, this is my thread.
Here is what I think happened! (if you own a business, then you know its very important to have someone in place before you fire a "key" position employee). Happens all the time.
Butch realized at some point during the season he would need to make a change at OC to get to the next level. But only if it was truly an upgrade. It couldn't be just anyone. Fit is exactly what Butch Jones meant. A guy he could trust to carry on and improve his approach to the offense and other aspects of the program. He spoke with DeBord privately to see if he had an interest. Debord was clearly interested, and IMO, they had real interview took place well before Jake quit.
It was obvious Butch wanted DeBord from the beginning. Why? because he had already had numerous (literally not telling how many) behind the scenes conversations with DeBord before the "official interview". After the official interview, there was little doubt in anyone's mind DeBord was going to be the guy.
Butch Jones has one interview and after that very first interview they guy just happens to jump out into an insurmountable lead. I don't think so. Butch knew. He already knew. (I'm not hating, and I'm fine with it) but his mind was already made up.
Once Butch knew had had DeBord ready to go, then he met with Jake and told him he wanted to make a change and gave him the option to resign and take another job instead of "getting fired". He gave Jake plenty of notice to look for another job. Jake takes a job as a QB coach (cmon, really) in the NFL. Not great but no shame and Jake moves on without getting fired and Butch gets the OC he wants. win win.
The other interviews were simply to go through the process and seem fair. I have done it multiple times and if you own a business and hire employees, then you have to. This is very common. Especially when you have other employees that want the job. You have to interview them to make them feel they were treated fairly. Its good business practice to do that in my opinion.
Butch was masterful in handling the whole situation. He got the guy he wanted, Jake got another job and didnt get fired, and everyone was treated fairly in the interview process including Azzani.
Jake didnt quit. After all his time with Butch together and what Butch is building and with the offensive firepower coming back and coming in. Jake didnt quit. He finally was in the big time with big time talent and he up and quits to be a position coach in the NFL. No thank you . I don't buy it.
At the end of the day, this is just talk and totally a moot point. I was just curious as to anyone else's take on Jake suddenly quitting for another job and leaving this explosive offense in the SEC behind.
