over the years, I continually notice that this isnt just a game of talent (though a very large percentage of it is), but about emotion, momentum, and getting kids to buy in.
One thing that helps kids to buy in - as either recruits or current players - is the ability to sell the program, the head coach, and the coordinator/position coach. On the point of position coaches/coordinators - a lot of most successful position coaches tend to be very hungry, motivated, younger (sub 50 year old), outspoken guys who are good on fundamentals and bring that swag element to their position.
Do you think our guys connect well with our coordinators/position coaches - and just being honest/transparent here - in particular with our Offensive Coordinator?
Kiffin is a full-on terd in my book, but like him or not -- - he is down on the sidelines, high fiving guys, talking sh-- and yes - he always brings that element of cockiness and hubris with him - and his guys feed off that. Same can be said about Smart, Drevno, Riley, etc. (One of the biggest ones that I remember here was Trooper Taylor, albeit he added more to the equation than you want, rules wise)
Nineteen, twenty year old college football players buy that stuff ... whether you like it/agree with it or not. Sometimes it can hurt you, of course - but when you have some talented guys and the right play calling - it can really really take on a life of its own.
Is there something to be said about that element missing from our coaching, particularly on offense? Do these players really connect with a 60 year old guy up in the press box?
