A couple of quick hits:
They played 7 tight in the box quite often daring us to run. They ran a fusion of the 4-2-5/ 3-3-5 where they would overload a side with a far out stretching standing LB or DE rushing the line. I think plain and simple they just used speed to beat us many times. We often were technically right but left guys un-blocked or missed assignments. I didn't see us get beat 1v1 except on probably 25% of the plays. Which is still a lot but not as catastrophic as one would think.
Also, take this into account we ran equal plays to start the game between pass and run and didn’t run a single true play action...we ran some fake read crap but no really good play actions...on this note
We never really ran any true zone reads sure one or two but nothing that makes the D think twice or anything outside the tackles
st play: simple A gap run up the middle for 2 yard gain Hurd hit 4 wide typical spread 5 lineman versus 6 rushers. If we had run this outside it would have been a huge gain.
nd play: 3 wide with TE heavy line they were in nickel and blitzed 2 catch for 8 yards O line actually held
rd: TE heavy up B-gap run great play and blocking on a basic zone scheme versus 3-3-5 hybrid again, gain of 7
th: Double TE extra heavy set pass for 8 yards but we missed assignments should have had great protection instead we missed blocks and bad assignments
th: Hurd hit at line for space I think both Coleman and Robertson were responsible here. 5 Lineman versus 6 with double blitz or spy whatever you want to call it but they rushed and play strong run support ill call it blitz
th: 7 in the box in a nickel set first and only time we really made them pay for it 10 yards for completion, pass pro held as defense was caught off guard.
th: QB draw hit at the line on bad blocking by the o line but a slippery Dobbs gets 5
Same 4-2-5 set up
th:5 wide pressure up the right side A gap between Roberston and Coleman again it looks like they were just lost on the play hesitated and then missed assignments quick pass to malone and drop on a high scamper throw
th: stacked box again with offset D blitz up the middle we hold and quick pass for a big gain
th: 5 wide a terrible read by Dobbs forcing a throw into double coverage (and a 50-50 pass interference call ) he had a qide open hurd who could have gotten 10-15 in open space on his check down but the pass protection held well. Again only two reads made by dobbs he kind of had his mind made up.
th: 5 lineman versus 7 defenders Corner stunt blitz and we run away on the only true outside the tackle run all first half for a gain of 12 even though hurd is hit at the line its the big stiff arm play.
th:C gap run on a horrendous Zone my local high school could run hit at the LOS again for a 4 yard gain again another far DE or LB standing up and a severe overload on the unbalanced line side.
th: another hit at the LOS for hurd 5v3-3-5 with blitzing LB’s we didn't even try lack of heart on this play hands down. 3 yd gain and we really see hurds athleticism again. 63 just lets them throw horrific technique its like he was asleep for the play
th: another hit at the LOS on a TE motion for run support 6 on the line and instead of hat on hat we run a terrible zone blocking scheme on a outside the tackle run for 2 yds
th: 5 lineman and a TE and a halfback all blocking Dobbs never read his progressions at all they run zone with Lbs and man with their CB’s in coverage he looked down williams the whole time and yes it is a GOD DANG TD
th: such an obvious blitz this is when i knew we were playing vanilla obvious blitz like 100% blitz 7v5 blitz so bad and instead of giving dobbs freedom to check out of the play and change it at the LOS what happens…..??? We run the same play and actually get lucky and have a 5 yard gain but I see a glaring observation of why kamara is not our every down back...his blocking on this play keeps it from being a 20+ yard play he is no beuno on this play at all.
th:8 guys blocking 7 in the box CBs playing off in case of deep ball great call up by debord slow ball by dobbs on the quick curl the CB makes a great read but over runs and instead of spinning out for a big gain 15 (jennings) spins into two tacklers hit at LOS
th: empty backfield 7 guys on the LOS 3-3-5 D LBs come in for run single coverage outside Dobbs makes a slower than molasses pass and the DB (22 duck i think) breaks and makes a great play on the ball. I would have loved to have seen a fake curl to fly route one time by the end of the second as they started jumping this route
th: 6 on 4 no reads made by dobbs another issue again and straight on the curl route to 7 for a 6 yard gain
th: run up the left b gap same as always same pulling as when we run right side B gap gain of 9 51 on the play is just lost no one to defend while his teammates are overwhelmed.
st:unbalanced hard overload left 4-2-5 with a LB/DE standing up to rush blitz by CB and this play confirms that Coleman is hurt as he is nowhere to be found and looks lost on this play severe mistake very slow and doesn't even touch his guy very uncharacteristic of him
nd:71 gets blown up on this play another example of our zone blocking being horrendous and us not getting a hat on a hat dobbs scrambles and incomplete
rd:4-2-5 defense again 55 just misses assignment like looked like a punk on the play
th: C gap run hurd hit at LOS once again 51 again just completely whiffs on his man8 yard run by hurd on just a great display of him being him.
th: 82 misses a bad block what could have been a phenomenal 20 or so yard play is simply a 7 yd gain because the one guy who has blockers outside and needs just one block gets hit becuase 82 misses it was really a sad display of blocking one man missing his assignment what CBJ is true i guess all 11 have to be uniform or the whole play collapses this is a true example of this
th: hit at LOS 71 misses again a terrible block i swear these guys looked so lost out there amazing play by hurd seriously go watch this one again it should have been a 3 yard loss instead its a 2 yard gain just great footwork i am forever impressed by Hurd in this game
th: 6 or 7th time they run a 3-4 with 7 in the box tight blitzing LB Kamara gets 7 on this play...4th play I think where josh smith just blocks till the buzzer he's still my favorite player with Hurd. He's awesome just watch him
On the blocks so chippy and confident he looks like he has fun blocking unlike Malone and Williams which by the way we run a few plays where they turn like they are gonna catch and then just stay there it was a funny Observation almost like rehearsal for a possible zone read play pass read we shall see
th:3rd and 3 blatant pass at first I thought their D-coordinator called a great game but I realized we telegraphed everything against a 3-4 zone LBs and CB 1v1 man 1st down Kamara 4yds
th LOS hit again 75 poor blocking leads to a bad Dobbs read which leads to a bad Dobbs keep for a loss if 75 holds his block we gain significant yards again Butchs 10 out of 11 equals a bad play mentality shows true maybe he knows what he's saying? Kamara would have had significant outside space
th: overload left on defense and again a LOS hit if we check down and go hat on hat here and run away on a simple play call check we gain good yards but… stubborn is as stubborn does we go vanilla on a high school half ass pull and zone block
st: Coleman falls down blitz wide open to Dobbs this is a great play if our line holds 3 open receivers big play and we get a holding penalty this one hurts my head how we were so bad and still held
nd: 82 misses his block on a well designed screen Hurd does what he does and blows through first contact and would have had more but Robertsons in the way
rd: 51 misses assignment 7 blockers versus 3 rushers again Coleman has to be hurt he needs to sit this week good throw to smith which on his route he would have continued to be open if Dobbs gets another 1 second to throw but Coleman whiffs on a play we should have dominated LOS dirty hit after the play by 28 on 25 josh talks ish they call his catch back on under thrown Dobbs ball which gets called back
guess what? Another LOS hit 6v4 rushers and 2 tight LBs A gap right off center for a 5 yards gain technically the play didn't happen since ATL stopped the game and rewound stuff it's BS IMO
th: first perfect protection all night 4-2-5 zone for d we eat it up with deep TE middle curl to 82 for 1st down
th:another LOS hit no push from the O-line was so surprising it's like they did half pass pro before getting to second level which we never get to no push at all this day another bad zone blocking scheme call again simple switch to man block hat on hat and we have a positive play this game. 75 weak link on this play
th:3-3-5/ 4-2-5 hybrid with DE standing up again overload we beat them with another Preston curl for 7 yards
th: stacked box 6v5 advantage D 8 in the box blitz with a freeman up the middle great blocking but we should have had Hurd in pass pro and we have a great play Dobbs escapes 1v1 outside I see why he made the throw but I think I only throw that to a Preston Williams or a Jeff George a tall guy who can make a play on the ball smith is a little short to make that play but 50-50 ball I throw it to the other two guys
So my thoughts? The O line must have smoked weed that day because so many uncharacteristic plays that said if we just go man blocking and go hat on hat we dominate we were obstinately stubborn in this game also Hurd may be our single greatest RB of all time if the kid went to Bama he would have won a heisman he gives his all every play and does so well with picking up yards and avoiding negative plays where as Kamara is a space and pace guy and we couldn't hold a block all night.
