Since it's October, and since I'm an avowed cinephile, it seemed apropos for me to recommend a horror flick a day to my fellow Volquest faithful. I'm hopeful that I manage to suggest at least a few hidden gems here and there, but I'm also going to toss out a few of the standards along the way.
Before I start, tho', I'll go ahead and acknowledge that horror isn't my preferred genre; so, if you're a bigtime horror junkie who binge watches even dreck like DEATH BED or MYSTICS IN BALI, you may be disappointed. Anyway, with that [possibly unnecessary] qualification out of the way, let's get to it.
For today, my recommendation is MARTYRS. The trailer is below:
[Apologies for the poor quality.]
For a while there, it seemed that the best horror flicks were coming from the French [be they French Canadians or just plain ol' frogs] or the Japanese. American and Korean cinema in particular has caught up recently [see THE HOST or TRAIN FROM BUSAN] but it's still flicks like this that lit the fire under Hollyweird's derriere to produce good horror again. Granted, this movie is itself derivative of Eli Roth's HOSTEL, but it's because it's not just mindless torture porn that I offer it to you folks for your Halloween enjoyment.
P.S. Apologies for barely posting this in time [hence the lack of detail, tho' that's probably preferred by the tl;dr crowd], but things are a little busy with a two-year old and a two-week old.
