Hello, all!
I’m a fan of popcorn movies, and the recent spate of Marvel superhero fare has tended to be pretty solid, with only a few exceptions. Much as I enjoyed CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, its sequel really is a lot better and in pretty much every respect. Also, rather than calling it CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, it might have been just as accurate to have titled it CAPTAIN AMERICA: JUST BECAUSE IT’S A COMIC BOOK SUPERHERO MOVIE DOESN’T MEAN IT HAS TO BE DUMB.
That might have made for some weird promotional materials, but it would still have been true. For a comic book superhero flick, this film is actually very sharp, playing around with some themes that might have felt topically relevant then but might feel even more so now.
The folks over at Honest Trailers put together another of their boffo send-ups for this one, and it even says that it’s better than the original in the first few seconds of the video. If you don’t mind spoilers, give it a look below:
This movie is so good and entertaining, it manages to make Georges St. Pierre look like a decent actor and not just an MMA guy that could put me in a kimura for saying that in about five seconds. That’s about as high praise as can be given, I’d say.
Some folks like to poo-poo the idea of watching a comic book film because it isn’t highbrow enough [or something]. There’s nothing wrong with Downton Abbey or Doc Martin, of course, but this film really is solid stuff despite the source material… or perhaps even more so because of it. The action in this film is good, but it’s the surprisingly topical and relevant storyline that really puts this one well ahead of its predecessor. Enjoy!
