Hello, all!
It’s a little surprising that more sequels don’t manage to be better than the original installments in the franchise, especially given how the original film has to do the heavy lifting of establishing the characters. One reason why ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES is superior to the original is that it allows the characters to go out and do their thing, and while some people might be put off by multiple subplots, it doesn’t detract from the film in this case.
Assuming you got used to the characters as portrayed – and, honestly, fantastically well cast [I mean, Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia are spot-on as Morticia and Gomez Addams… and I believe that Christina Ricci may actually *be* Wednesday Addams] – then you’ll appreciate the new nemesis in this one. I liked Joan Cusack a lot in GROSSE POINTE BLANK, but she makes a great antagonist in this one… definitely an upgrade from the prior film.
And the piece de resistance, that Thanksgiving play.
It’s a little bit more gory than the prior film, and despite being comically presented, it still may be a little bit more bloody than you’d like if you’re thinking of having a movie night with the kiddos in tow.
The recent animated film in the franchise was okay, but it didn’t really hold my kiddos’ attention, so if you’ve got older kiddos who you think can handle the goofily macabre cinematic antics of the Addams crew, you will probably want to give this one a go. Enjoy!
