Hello, all!
Today’s flick is yet another entry in the kiddo-friendly flick department, and it’s considerably more kiddo-friendly fare than yesterday’s film was. Good as PADDINGTON was, and it was really pretty dang great, PADDINGTON 2 manages to be even better. Though the original seems to have gotten the character just right, the sequel manages to allow the character’s best features to be put in even more sharp relief by putting the ol’ bear in prison. It’s akin to when the jeweler makes sure to put that black cloth behind the diamond, making sure you see how brilliant it is.
That may sound all too saccharine, but the movie manages to carry through with a winning performance by the titular bear, whose almost naïve belief that being nice is almost like a catalyst that pushes the plot along as much as its main character. It’s a message that might not seem especially realistic, but it’s a kid’s movie, and a brilliantly executed one, at that, so the idea that being nice is enough to prevail is one that even the most cynical or curmudgeonly among us can accept.
As Henry James once said, “Three things in human life are important. The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. And the third is to be kind.” Or, in the wise words of Johnny Dalton:
You really can’t go wrong with either this film or the original, but maybe those who are needing a little extra push to watch a kid’s movie will be convinced when I mention that this film had a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes… until a pair of doltish critics decided to go throw up negative reviews about it. That’s out of hundreds of reviews, though, and the vast majority agree with my take – this film has a lot of good humor, but what really helps it be even better than the original is its heart.
Yes, it’s five-star stuff.
