Hello, all.

I'm almost reluctant to mention today's pick, since I'm guessing that some will think it some sort of reference to the events of the day... but, it's not. Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar, after all.

So, without any further ado, today's recommendation is:

DUMB AND DUMBER

From IMDb, the plot is: "After a woman leaves a briefcase at the airport terminal, a dumb limo driver and his dumber friend set out on a hilarious cross-country road trip to Aspen, to return the briefcase to its owner."

I guess you could argue whether or not Harry or Lloyd is really the dumb [or dumber] one, but that's very much beside the point. The point is that the Farrelly Brothers managed to capture comedic lightning in a bottle - again - with this particular flick [tho' "again" is a little disingenuous since this one was released before THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY].

I'm not really sure that this film would have succeeded with another pairing of actors in the aforementioned roles. It certainly wouldn't have worked without Jim Carrey, but I'm not sure that Jeff Daniels wasn't likewise almost perfectly cast. If you don't believe me, just check out the trailer below:

Man, it's hard for me to imagine this film being given the title of a "Classic Trailer." Time flies and all that. Apparently, so do mobile pet grooming trucks. Now, not every part of this film works for me... like the bean-eating scene in BLAZING SADDLES, the whole "Jeff Daniels destroys the toilet" scene just really didn't make me laugh. That's probably heresy to some of you. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, too, perhaps. Regardless, the flick absolutely hits a whole lot more than it misses.

Like many of the films I've mentioned in this "series," this one isn't breaking new ground... and I'm sure that anyone reading this has had a few of the more memorable scenes pop into your heads. The "He must work out" *.gif has been a favorite on the GQ, so maybe that one is yours. For me, tho', it's this one:

There's really just a lot here... possible allusion to INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM notwithstanding, there's the chop-socky physical comedy of Jackie Chan [and Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton thereby], the goofy slapstick of The Three Stooges, and even a little [also perhaps unintentional] nod to POPEYE. In ninety seconds, the film covered a lot of bases, and managed to be pretty dang funny, besides.

It may not have the rewatchability of a film like AIRPLANE!, but my guess is that when you're channel surfing and happen across this one on TBS or what have you, you stop... and you probably laugh. A lot. If you haven't had the chance to do that, then give yourself a break from watching the inexorable march of the 'Rona and check it out.

Enjoy!
