IN BRUGES
[Film stats: Earned $7.8M domestically. Got 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and 87% on Flixster.]
Hello, all!
If you’re like me, you saw this one on the shelves of your local video rental store, said “In Bruggas? Pass,” and missed an absolutely spectacular film. Like yesterday’s film, it tends toward being a bit quirky, but it doesn’t become so consumed with that particular cinematic affectation that it doesn’t manage to be great.
The plot, according to the IMDB, is as follows: “Guilt-stricken after a job gone wrong, hitman Ray and his partner await orders from their ruthless boss in Bruges, Belgium, the last place in the world Ray wants to be.”
Colin Farrell plays that guilt-stricken hitman, and Brendan Gleeson plays his partner [if you don’t recognize the name, just think of Hamish from BRAVEHEART]. A pair of solid actors, they’re joined by Ralph Fiennes as the aforementioned “ruthless boss,” and he puts in a good performance, as well. This isn’t a film that’s carried by any one performance, though, but rather a solid ensemble effort replete with memorable moments.
For those of you who have seen this film, a sampling: “You eet ze Canadian.” Or, “YOU’RE AN INANIMATE F***ING OBJECT!” For those of who haven’t watched this gem and want to check out a trailer for it, I’ve embedded one below:
From that trailer, you can probably see why this movie was nominated for a Best Writing Oscar. It didn’t win, alas, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a great movie. Odds are that it’s one that you haven’t seen yet, too, so if this little write-up has convinced you to give it a try, you’re in for a treat.
Enjoy!
P.S. For those of you who give this one a shot and enjoy it, you may also want to check out THE GUARD or THE NICE GUYS.
