Hello, all.
I'll be shifting gears away from the "standards" today, and recommending a film that, at least in its title, fits these strange days in which we're living quite well.
Before I do, tho', I learned just yesterday that, per the IMDb, STRIPES was aka CHEECH AND CHONG JOIN THE ARMY. Weird. But it makes for an even better reason for me to have recommended the two back-to-back, even if in a posteriori fashion.
Anyway, today's recommendation is born from a slightly selfish/personal perspective, as the guy responsible for the flick, Bill Plympton, was an acquaintance of meine Oma. Interesting dude, and a strange film... if you don't believe me, just look at the title:
I MARRIED A STRANGE PERSON!
From IMDb, the plot is: "A newlywed develops a strange lump on his neck that gives him the ability to transform people or objects at will. His wife is very upset. Meanwhile, the CEO of Smilecorp learns of this man and his ability and sees a way to achieve world domination if only the man can be taken alive."
We're likely all learning something about our significant others during this "stay at home" period, so here's hoping that this flick makes you feel a little better about whatever strange discoveries you may have recently made.
Since I can't find a proper trailer for this flick, I'll just embed a clip that I found that lets you know just what sort of style [in tone and in animation] that it has. If you're reminded of one of the vignettes in CREEPSHOW, or perhaps of the anime sequence in KILL BILL, VOL. 1, there's a good reason. Enough yapping, here it is:
Pretty much the same kind of thing you'd expect if you're at all familiar with the Plymptoons [or the many animators that he inspired. I'll close by sharing one of the former and one of the latter [by Don Hertzfeldt]. First up, an excerpt [sorry, I can't find the whole thing on YouTube] of one of the better Plymptoons:
And now, the "Rejected Cartoons" by Don Hertzfeldt:
Enjoy! Especially if you're as delightfully demented as I am!
[And if you can tell what the cartoon says at the 6:37 mark in "Rejected Cartoons," I'd be happy to find out - it sounds like "A monkey pork choppy McMoots!" to me.]
Other films recommended:
[Day 1 - GROUNDHOG DAY, Day 2 - KINGPIN, Day 3 - TRADING PLACES, Day 4 - FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF; Day 5 - MODERN TIMES; Day 6 - AIRPLANE!; Day 7 - CHEECH AND CHONG'S NEXT MOVIE; Day 8 - STRIPES]
