With the OC being such a huge hire, and there being such dissent over DeBord, I'd like to know what everyone has thought about recent hires in the interest of full disclosure, and then state your case for or against DeBord.
Football:
2006 OC: Cutcliffe- Thought it was a home run hire, easy choice. Worked out well obviously.
2008 OC: Clawson- Thought this was awful from the get-go. Just made no sense. Abject failure.
2009 HC and staff: Kiffin- Liked the hire. Thought he put together a great staff. Obviously he burned us. Bad decision. I was wrong.
2010 HC and staff: Dooley- Hated it. Did not see the point in hiring a losing coach from the WAC. Thought the staff was mediocre, did not want to keep Chaney. Tried to give him a chance, but my gut reaction was correct.
2012 DC: Sunseri- I liked the hire initially. Had a good resume, Saban disciple. As it turned out, an 8 year old with one year of Madden experience would have coached circles around him. Never been so wrong in my life.
2013 HC and staff: Jones- I was cautiously optimistic. Thought we could have done better, but that it wasn't a terrible choice, certainly an upgrade. Did not love the staff. Recruiting has been better than I could have imagined, and the defense has improved greatly. Offensive staff has not impressed on the field though, but I realize the shortcomings beyond their control. So far, been better than expected in recruiting, about what I expected on the field.
Basketball:
2005: Pearl- Loved the hire. Had done nothing but win. Obviously turned out well, even though it ended ugly. I was correct in this instance.
2011: Martin- Didn't like the hire. Figured we could do better. Did a decent job, but my gut reaction was still correct.
2014: Tyndall- Liked the hire. So far I'm encouraged. Hope he gets through the NCAA mess. Jury still out.
Now, as for DeBord, I just don't think it would be a good hire. He hasn't coached in years, hasn't recruited or coordinated in even longer. As all the Fulmer bashers say, if he were any good still, someone would have reached out by now. Underachieved greatly at Michigan IMO. His offense should have been prolific with all the talent he had. If he ever lost a game like Appy St here, he'd be hanged upside down from the Torchbearer. Split time b/w Henson and Brady (don't give me any BS about pressure to play Henson). You can bring up the national championship 18 years ago, but you then lose all right to complain about 3rd and Chavis or the Mustang package. Not to mention, we'd still have to hire a QB coach (coaching QBs at Little Sisters of the Poor when Purple Rain came out doesn't count).
I know, who am I to question Butch? But sunshine pumpers feel that way about all our coaches, and with that attitude, there's really no point in posting on a message board at all. The board is for discussion, and generally I support Butch, but I do not believe DeBord would be a good decision. The man is not immaculate. Now, curious to hear everyone else's opinions.
