Very incouraged with the defensive effort even against a challenged offense. Defensively we played well enough to win. I think that will bode well over the course of the season.
The TOs were in acceptable and we have to do better on place kicking if we hope to have a successful year.
But there were 2 direct things and 1 indirect thing that cost us the game IMO and all of them fall right at the head coaches feet. Another slow start and that has become the MO of Butch's teams rhe last 2 years. When you continue to make the same mistake over and over that has to be on the head coach. Of the 2 direct reasons we lost 1 affected the offensive side of the ball and the other the defensive side but BOTH were derived from poor coaching. To add insult to injury both were coaching 101 mistakes and inexcusable as a result. With first and goal inside the 1 give it to your great power back or go under center and sneak it 4 times. The odds of not scoring a TD would be extremely remote and the odds of not scoring at least a FG virtually ZERO. Defensively there is always a chance a Hail Mary can work and we certainly know that first hand. I could live well enough if the Florida reciever making a great catch with our guys all around him. But they had TWO guys open in the end zone with NO Vols in the enzone is insane and shouldn't happen to ANY FB team with players 10 years old or older. That is ONE HUNDRED PERSENT coaching. Butch got beat the. last time we played there by a long pass ftom a struggling QB. That play was a little bit freakish but none the less inexcusable and not that dissimilar to tonight's fiasco. Granted Shoop should have never allowed it either but I have to put it DIRECTLY at the feet and SQARELY on the shoulders of Jones as he ad lived a very similar a year and a half ago.
JMO but their are huge systemic concerns and inexcusable mistakes emanating from Jones. The 2 daggers tonight came from coaching errors that would have been unexpected and inexcusable in middle school much less the SEC.
