so long as 2 is QB, you will have defenses unafraid of stacking the box and coming after him. In no way do I want to insult or belittle the young man. I applaud his efforts to date, and hate that things havent worked out. However, being objective, he just doesnt appear to have 'it.' (It being one of those things that we all know when we see it.)
We just flipped from "tough game" on the schedule for some, to now being "great opportunity to steal a win" for some middling, lower tier programs. If they dont fear you, then you are going to be in trouble. (Perfect example - Mannings last year at Denver. Hell, he could barely throw 15-20 yd outs anymore, yet other teams/Dcoordinators were still playing him like he was 10 years younger. Why? They feared him. Just that simple)
They know, with our OL play and the rest of the teams confidence in him shot, that getting just decent pass rush on him will basically bring us to a screeching halt.
As a D Coordinator, defensive player, you dont have to worry about his decision making, his accuracy, or his timing beat you.
Sure, he might get one play or two off and beat you - but over the course of a game he wont.
Or better yet, his decision making might actually help you (score points). So one just cant see any upside in his ability to beat the press upfront, or his ability to do anything deep (if you just drop back and wait). Where does that leave you?
So the defenses going forward will dictate what we do vs us dictating anything or making them go thru any types of adjustments. Thats just a terrible dynamic.
No matter what the sport is, when there is a loss of team confidence, and the other team senses the loss of motivation and smells blood in the water, you better do something to shake that off and get people playing together again.
Otherwise, this might get uglier.
Last year, I believe that Jauan Jennings and other seniors really led the second half season effort with their determination. I dont believe that 2 has the stuff to carry this team on his back.
Firing a coach might be motivating for some of the other coaches.
Benching some guys and letting younger more inexperienced players get a shot might be another message.
Starting someone at QB who maybe has more question marks in terms of experience, but yet might have better natural abilities or might not make critical decision making errors that get you beat:
all of that might be a recipe for change, without signaling the worst thing in sports - desperation - which is what I saw with his two pick six heaves last weekend....
