QB1 won't be determined by routes-on-air. This means it's going to be hard to get any real idea of what's going on with only the beginning of practice being available to the media, but that doesn't mean we can't see who's taking more reps, as it appears that Mauer seemed to take fewer reps today.
This leads to point 2, which is that it is nice to see Heupel actually distributing the reps in a logical manner. Pruitt had the philosophy that all your QB's took the same number of reps, so your 4th string guy was getting as much practice as the guy you were hoping would play the whole season. It didn't make any sense, and it certainly didn't help JG to improve. It's one thing to get more than one guy prepared. It's something else entirely to get your starter only partially prepared so that you can keep giving the worst QB as many reps as possible.
