I just saw a large dark colored bird with a light colored head fly through the woods. The size was right for a large pileated woodpecker but I saw no red and the head just didn’t seem right for a pileated woodpecker. More rounded. Of course I didn’t get a great look at it and couldn’t find it in the trees. I am in western North Carolina. Any thoughts on what it was other than a pileated that I didn’t get a good look at?
