Checkerboard End-zone To The Out Of Bounds Lines

It sure looked great when the checkerboard end-zone went all the way to the boundary lines (like the posted highlights of the 1989 UT-Auburn game). I assume we are no longer allowed to do that but it seems like I saw some games on TV last fall of some other schools that had paint all the way to the edges of their end-zone. Anyone know for sure what the rule is.
