Alright, so we are going about this rewatch a little different than other’s this season. I’m still going to tally the explosive plays, overthrows and some other stats – but really, I’m just going to provide a few sentences of my thoughts following each possession. Saturday was a good day for Tennessee. Let’s find out some stuff we missed in real time.
Explosive plays (>20yds): 1 (1Q, Hooker to Payton, 35yd TD), 2 (1Q, Evans 92yd TD rush), 3 (Hooker to Tillman for 29yd rec), 4 (Hooker to Jones for 35yd screen TD), 5 (2Q, Len’Neth Whitehead 33 yd run), 6 (3Q, Hooker to Tillman 24yd TD), 7 (4Q, Milton rush of 32 yds), 8 (4Q, Peirce TD run of 27 yds)
Overthrows: 1 (1Q, Hooker to Tillman far sideline – a bit of a tug by CB, no-call),
Drops: 1 (2Q, Payton on 3rd & goal – was being held, still should have caught it),
Penalties: 1 (2Q, Holding – Darnell Wright), 2 (3Q, holding – Dayne Davis)

- Solon Page got the start at LB, played first two series
- No TN punts on the day
- Vols brought in Slaughter came in to play STAR in series 2
- Vols showed dime package on 3rd down in second series, 6 DBs on field, 3 DL, Turnage in
- Jabari Small not seen again after second drive….3 att, 38 yds.
- Defensively, Banks, Beasley, Slaughter & Young stood out to me
- Offensively, Ollie Lane, Darnell Wright, Evans, Hooker, Whitehead, Jones stood out to me
- I think Evans got denied two more TDs (last one was reviewed at TV break)
- QBs making an effort to slide and get down on runs
- D1 (Miz) -25yd line: 3 plays, -4 yards, 1:17, PUNT
- A horrid start for Missouri who could have put pressure on Tennessee right away with a good opening drive. Instead, Badie goes nowhere on play one, Bazelak is tripped up for a sack on second down and Charles nearly intercepts it on third down.
- D1 (TN) -43yd line: 5 plays, 57 yds, 1:15, TOUCHDOWN
- Great opening drive for Tennessee. After a quick strike to Tillman on the first play, Vols run it three-straight times against a poor Missouri front-seven for gains of 4,6 and 5 yards. Tennessee finds the end zone on the first explosive play of the day, Payton on the skinny post for 35 yds. Vols ran it out of a nub set, trips to short side with TE on other side alone. Tillman got the safety to bit on his post, was late to help over the top of Payton...Vols 7-0
- D2 (Miz) -25yd line: 14 plays, 50 yards, 5:15, FG (Mevis, 43yds)
- Missouri got some things going offensively, ran with some pace, too. Three separate holding calls slowed up the drive, really with only the third one derailing it. Seemed like the Tigers were picking on Alontae Taylor on that drive with 2 deep ball attempts and a screen right to him. Vols employ a heavy DB set for some of drive, must do better at getting off the field on third downs (Missouri 2-of-3 on 3rd downs on drive)…Vols 7-3
- D2 (TN) -25yd line: 7 plays, 75 yds, 1:52, TOUCHDOWN
- Vols go fast with quick passing game, pick on CB Evans who was flagged once, could have been flagged twice. A couple of chunk running plays from Jabari Small and Hendon Hooker before two final runs from Evans who scored. Greta blocking by Ollie Lane on drive, great down blocking from Wright & Lane on TD….Vols 14-3
- D3 (Miz) -25 yd line: 4 plays, 19 yds, 1:56, PUNT
- Mizzou tried to slow down the pass rush with two screens to Badie on drive – the first connects for a first down. Bazelack mises badly on third down after Vols stuff only attempted rush of drive. Good defensive series for Vols
- D3 (TN) -8 yd line: 1 play, 92 yds, 00:12, TOUCHDOWN
- Tiyon Evans takes handoff straight off right trap, scores on 92yd rush. Ollie lane GREAT kickout block to spring him, backside backer not fast enough to catch him, safety closes, but doesn’t get him….Vols 21-3
- D4 (Miz) -10 (penalty): 4 plays, 11 yds, 1:31, TURNOVER
- After review, Missouri picks up first down on overturned play – catch on sideline. Very next play, Jeremy Banks intercepts Bazelak pass that’s underthrown. Underthrown b/c Page gives pressure. Great play by Banks as he sinks, leaps up and makes athletic catch. Nearly scores, down to the 1yd line.
- D4 (TN) +1: 1 play, 1 yd, 00:05, TOUCHDOWN
- Tiyon Evans makes good of turnover and punches it in from the one on the first play. It’s Evans’ third-straight carry with a touchdown…Vols 28-3
- D5 (Miz) -25: 12 plays, 75 yds, 4:53, TOUCHODWN
- As the second quarter takes over on this drive, Banks makes stop for no-gain on third down – help from Jackson. Tigers convert on fourth down to keep drive alive. Missouri gets Badie 9 touches before finally finding the end zone. Vols set edge well on drive for most part, backside pursuit just wasn’t there on some. A couple of missed tackles as well…Vols 28-10
- D5 (TN), -21: 5 plays, 73 yds, 1:31, TOUCHDOWN
- Tennessee responds with a 35yd screen pass that goes for a TD on 3rd & 12. Vols had Cade Mays and Javontez Spraggins out in space blocking. This comes after a sack where it looked like Jacob Warren didn’t block pressure off edge….Vols 35-10
- D6 (Miz), -25: 6 plays, 14 yds, 1:54, PUNT
- Jeremy Banks and Roman Harrison great on run fits this drive. Mizzou converts third down on athletic catch form Swinson….Theo Jackson goes down on third down incompletion as he and Dove collide at the same time going for ball. Bot making a play on the ball, definitely not targeting as it was bang-bang, both players eyeing the ball. Jackson does not return to ballgame. Credit Banks with the hurry as he stuck Bazelak while throwing.
- D6 (TN) -14: 10 plays, 86 yds, 3:18, TOUCHDOWN
- Len’Neth Whitehead the bell cow of this drive as he got 5 carries with a long of 33 yds. Vols got another chunk run from Hooker on drive of 19 yds. Evans comes in and nearly scores for the fourth tie on day, but Hooker dives in for the one-yard TD on next play. Vols convert on a fourth down on the drive…..Vols 42-10
- D7 (Miz) – 29: 3 plays, 0 yds, 00:58, PUNT
- Safety play following the Theo Jackson injury is Tamarian McDonald (FS), McCollough (SS), Slaughter (STAR) and McDonald a hit stick forces incompletion on first down. Great pursuit by Baron and Taylor on speed option to short side of field on second down. Young a near sack on third down, forces bad throw
- D7 (TN) -42: 9 plays, 50 yds, 3:32, FIELD GOAL
- Good PR by Jones to get drive started. Vols called for first penalty on the day, third down holding by Darnell Wright. JaVonta Payton should have hauled in a touchdown catch on 3rd & goal. He was being held, but he should have brought it down…..Vols 45-10
- D8 (Miz) -9: 1 play, 15 yards, 00:06 before HALF ENDS
- Harris rush for 15 yards before half ends
- D8 (TN) -25: 12 plays, 65 yards, 3:16….FIELD GOAL
- Vols get 15 yards on bogus horsecollar call from Mizzou. Tennessee runs it 7 times, passes it 4 on the drive. McGrath hits on second FG of the day…Vols 48-10
- Missouri runs ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown. Abrams-Draine 100 yard return – Looks like Bradley Jones gave up contain on near sideline. TOUCHOWN, Vols 48-17
- D9 (TN) -25: 10 plays, 75 yards, 4:07…TOUCHDOWN
- Whitehead goes down after taking tough blow on first down. Does not return but walks off just fine. Marcus Peirce comes in, scores on 14yd TD but it’s called back on Dayne Davis hold. Davis is injured, Jeremiah Crawford comes in to play RT. Beautiful throw over the middle by Hooker to Tillman for touchdown….Vols 55-17
- D9 (Miz) -25: 10 plays, 32 yards, 4:24, TURNOVER
- Tennessee struggling to get set and line up at times on this drive when Missouri started moving it with some pace. Byron Young another near sack. Jaylen McCollough intercepts Bazelak off a topped ball (McDonald in coverage)
- D10 (TN) +49: 14 plays, 48 yds, 7:43…Turnover on Downs
- Jaylen Wright now in at running back for Tennessee and gets first four carried before Peirce comes back in. Hooker still I this football game, running the ball. Why on Earth? Vols fail to find the end zone after 1st & goal from the four-yard line. It was Peirce three times for gains of 2,1 and 0. Evans on fourth & goal stopped at LOS. Turnover on downs.
- D10 (Miz) -1: 10 plays, 99 yards, 4:31, TOUCHOWN
- Garbage time TD, but still don’t want to let an offense march 99 yards down the field, ever. Bazelak had six completion for 56, 7, 4, 0, 10 and 9 yards. Vols 55-24
- D11 (TN) -25: 6 plays, 75 yards, 4:01, TOUCHDOWN
- Joe Milton in at QB. OL of (l-to-r) Crawford, Lane, Ball, Lampley, Davis. TE is Solamon. WRs of Frerking, Hyatt, Keyton. Milton runs for 32 yards on play one. Tennessee doesn’t attempt a pass on the drive. Peirce gets in from 27 yards for TD – good block by Dayne Davis…Vols 62-24
- D11 (Miz) -20: 8 plays, 55 yards, 4:01, END OF GAME
- Final drive of the game. Second drive in-a-row Bazelak connects for big gain on play one. De’Shawn Rucker goes for pick, misses.
