Sometime during his sophomore season Hurd begins to petition for instilling some looks and schemes on offense that fit his ability and talent better... Due to a combination of a few things IMO... First being, the pounding and beating that he is taking, second being the success of guys like Fournette, Chubb, etc.
Towards the end of that season, when it became apparent that the Offense was not going to be able to successfully develop a real passing attack stubborn Butch and co finally caved and decided to instill the under-center look before the bowl game... When it had success it gave Hurd the leverage he needed to have a real conversation with Butch on where things would be going for him this season. Butch then assured Jalen that the under-center I formation look would be a key element this season and that they would continue to develop and scheme for his talents.
Going into this season, Hurd probably put a lot of pressure on himself... Wanted to get to the NFL knew he needed numbers. At the same time Butch finally began to see things develop with his passing attack and grew confident that it would work and slowly abandoned the under-center look. This eventually lead to a contemptuous relationship that peaked during the GA game and has unfolded since then.
