My upstairs AC unit has had trouble keeping up with the thermostat the last few days and the air flow seemed underwhelming. When I opened up the Aprilaire filter housing and removed the filter, it was filthy and turned out I hadn't changed it in 18 + months! (I always write the date of replacement on the filters)
When I went to replace the filter, I looked into the unit & noticed that there is ice covering the coils!
My questions are:
1. Did the dirty filter/poor air flow combined with it running for continuously fo about 24-32 hours cause the coils to freeze up? OR could I have a refrigerant leak?
2. If I just turn the unit on fan only and let it run, will it take an eternity to thaw? Is there any danger of water damage to the harwood floors just outside the closet that the HVAC unit is in? Should I remove the new filter to make sure it doesn't get wet? OR should I use a hair dryer to thaw it quicker?
My office is in the upstairs of my house and its starting to warm up in here!
Any advice would be appreciated!
